Vinesh Phogat Disqualification: Following wrestler Vinesh Phogat's disqualification from the Paris Olympics 2024 on Wednesday after being found overweight ahead of her women's 50 kg final bout, the leaders of the opposition expressed their anger and called for a thorough investigation into the matter. Phogat had scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the gold medal bout in the event.

Reacting to Phogat's disqualification, Congress leader and Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi said that the grappler's disqualification was unfortunate. He also exuded hope that the Indian Olympic Association will strongly challenge this decision.

"It is unfortunate that Vinesh Phogat, India's pride, who reached the finals after defeating world champion wrestlers, was disqualified on technical grounds. We have full hope that the Indian Olympic Association will strongly challenge this decision and provide justice to the daughter of the country. Vinesh is not one to give up, we are confident that she will come back stronger in the arena. You have always made the country proud Vinesh. Even today the whole country stands with you as your strength," Gandhi said in a post on X.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav demanded a thorough investigation into the "technical reasons" behind Phogat's disqualification. "There should be a thorough investigation into the technical reasons behind Vinesh Phogat not being able to take part in the final and the truth and the real reason behind it should come to the fore," Yadav said in a post in Hindi on X.

'Black Day In Sports History'

In a post on X in Hindi, Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala said, "140 crore Indians are shocked, This is a “black day” in sports history. This is a huge “hate conspiracy”, First, the Wrestling Association President, BJP MP of that time and Modi Ji's favourite, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, tortured the country's world champion daughter with physical and mental torture, Then the BJP people got this daughter of the country dragged by the police on the streets of Jantar Mantar, Then the Modi government filed an FIR against this daughter, Vinesh Phogat @Phogat_Vinesh still never lost courage, bravery and patience, In Paris Olympics, she defeated the world's undefeated wrestler Yui Susaki and two other champion wrestlers and raised the national flag. But this did not please the conspirators either."

"But know that every child of Haryana and the country is with him, for us he is an Olympic gold medal winner. The conspiracy's labyrinth will surely break, Faces will definitely be exposed. Vinesh, the country is saying…. She fought very bravely, The daughter of India is a queen," he further stated.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) later confirmed Phogat's disqualification and requested privacy for the wrestler. "It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the women's wrestling 50 kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50 kg this morning," the IOA stated.

The members of the Opposition also raised the issue of disqualification of Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat from in the Lok Sabha.
