Uma Thomas, MLA from Thrikkakara, who sustained severe brain and spine injuries after a fall, has shown notable improvement, according to doctors at Renai Medicity Multi Super Specialty Hospital. On Tuesday, the medical team reported that she opened her eyes, responded to commands, moved her hands and legs, and recognized her children—a significant milestone in her recovery.

"This demonstrates remarkable progress in the treatment for brain and spine injuries," said a medical bulletin issued by the hospital, as per a report on PTI.  However, according to the doctors, her lung condition remains critical and they cautioned that a full recovery will take time. She remains on ventilator support, and her vital signs are stable, they said.

On Sunday evening, the Congress MLA suffered injuries after falling from the VIP gallery, approximately 15 feet high, at Kochi's Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium during preparations for a traditional dance performance.

The event 'Mridanga Naadam' was aimed at setting a Guinness World Record with over 12,000 Bharatanatyam dancers, including actor-dancer Divya Unni. Following the incident, an event management company manager was arrested on Monday for security lapses that led to the accident.

Congress leaders have raised concerns over alleged lapses in safety measures at the stadium. They criticised the safety protocols at the venue, alleging negligence that endangered lives.

Congress members revealed that the space between the front row seats and the gallery's edge was minimal, with only a ribbon serving as a barricade. Officials stated that a specialized medical team from the Health Department would evaluate Uma's condition, as per PTI. The team, headed by Kottayam Medical College Superintendent Dr. Jayakumar, comprises experts from Kottayam Government Medical College and Ernakulam Government Medical College, alongside the hospital's current medical board.
