Justices Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh and R Mahadevan on Thursday took oath as judges of the Supreme Court. With their elevation as the Supreme Court Judges the top court will now function at full strength with 34 judges. This full strength will be maintained till September at least, till Justice Hima Kohli retires.
The two judges were sworn-in to fill in the recent vacancies that came up after after Justice A S Bopanna and Justice Aniruddha Bose retiredfrom the top court.
Former Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court, Justice N Kotiswar Singh, today became the first judge from Manipur to have been appointed to the top court.
Justice Singh originally hails from Manipur and was first appointed as a judge of the Gauhati High Court in October 2011. Following the formation of the Manipur High Court, he was transferred there. The Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud today administered oath to the two new judges of the Supreme Court.
In February 2023, Justice Singh was appointed as Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court.
Born on June 10, 1963, Justice Mahadevan served as former acting chief justice of the Madras High Court before he took oath as a Supreme Court judge The Supreme Court Collegium while recommending him noted that Justice Mahadevan addition to the top court will give representation to the backward community and bring diversity to the apex court.
Justice Mahadevan completed his law degree at Madras Law College and enrolled as a lawyer in the year 1989. He was elevated as a judge of the Madras High Court in the year 2013.
On July 11, the Supreme Court Collegium proposed the elevation of Justice Singh and Mahadevan to the apex court.
The Centre on Tuesday notified the appointment of Justice N Kotiswar Singh and Justice Mahadevan as the judges of the Supreme Court.
