An exchange of fire is underway between security forces and terrorists in the forest area of Ishber Nishat area in Srinagar, said the Kashmir Zone police on Sunday.
The encounter began at around 9 am in the forest area connecting Dachigam and the upper reaches of the Nishat area, said the officials.
The gunbattle was launched after a cordon and search operation in the area following information about the presence of terrorists there.
"A joint Police and security forces operation was launched in Zabarwan forest area of #Srinagar based on specific intelligence about the presence of terrorists," said the Kashmir Zone police in a post on X.
"An exchange of fire ensued during the operation. Further details will follow," it added.
There are no reports of any casualty so far.
Encounter Underway In Kishtwar
Another encounter was underway in a remote forest area in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir in which an Army personnel was injured, officials said, as per a PTI report. The gunfight started in Keshwan forests when the joint search parties of the Army and police intercepted hiding terrorists around 11 am, they said.
The operation in the forests of Kuntwara and Keshwan has been going on since Thursday evening after the killing of two village defence guards, they said.
"Encounter begins at Keswan-Kistwar between terrorists and security forces. Three or four terrorists believed to be trapped," a police spokesperson said.
According to the official, this was the same group of terrorists who killed the two innocent villagers. Around four terrorists have been cornered by security forces, said Kishtwar police, reported NDTV. "Encounter begins at Keshwan Kishtwar between terrorists and Security forces. 3/4 terrorists believed to be trapped. This is same group which killed the 2 innocent villagers," they said.
