New Delhi: Congress interim-president Sonia Gandhi will travel abroad for medical check-ups, party general secretary Jairam Ramesh said in a statement on Tuesday. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Rahul Gandhi will accompany her, though Jairam Ramesh did not specify the dates for the travels.

"She will also visit her ailing mother before she returns to New Delhi," Congress general secretary said in a statement. However, Rahul Gandhi will address the Congress 'Mehangai Par Halla Bol' rally in New Delhi on September 4, 2022.

This comes at a time when the party is prepping for its Kanyakumari to Kashmir 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' which is set to start on September 7. It also comes ahead of the election of the party president, the schedule for which is expected to be out this week. Congress, earlier, informed the party will elect a new president by September 20.

After contracting Covid-19 for the first time, Sonia Gandhi suffered post-Covid-related complications in June. She was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi for over a week. It was reported that she was detected with a respiratory tract infection.

Two months later, she tested positive for Covid-19 again and was in isolation for a week as per government protocol.

Earlier on Tuesday, Sonia Gandhi paid a visit to President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi.

Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Anand Sharma resigned from the chairmanship of the party's steering committee for Himachal Pradesh on Sunday.

In a letter to Sonia Gandhi, he said his "self-respect has been hurt" as he has not been consulted or invited to any of the meetings of the party ahead of the HP Assembly Elections.
