This has led to a serious constitutional crisis in Uttar Pradesh and the Samajwadi Party. These are the possibilties of what could happen in the future which is uncertain right now:
- Samajwadi Party has now broken into two factions. With Mulayam already spelling out that he would soon decide on the new chief minister, spin doctors of Akhilesh Yadav have braced for the battle, too.
- According to sources, there are reports that if in the seesaw battle of power, the former wrestler saw "something more in the offing" he might remove Akhilesh and take over the reins of power himself, to exert control over the state government machinery.
- This decision is likely because given the support the party has had for Akhilesh, only Mulayam Singh Yadav stands a chance to beat Akhilesh and take the party forward as a whole.
- But according to the constitution, Akhilesh Yadav cannot be removed from the post of the Chief Minister without the floor test.
- In such a scenario, there is a chance that Akhilesh Yadav may win the majority and prove that most of the MLAs support him. Even if some MLAs choose to side with Mulayam Singh Yadav, it won't be very difficut for Akhilesh Yadv to win the majority.
- This is because sources say that the UP CM has already been in touch with senior Congress and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) leaders for possible support if it came to a floor test in the state assembly.
- Out of the 403 Vidhan Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, a party has to win 202 seats to make the state government.
- Currently, Akhilesh supporters are sure that they would win 175 seats in the Vidhan Sabha. 175 seats are only 27 seats less than the majority.
- So, in such a scenario, if Congress who have 28 seats to themselves agree to ally with Akhilesh Yadav, then Akhilesh Yadav would be able to continue as the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh.
- There is also a talk of floating a new party by the Akhilesh faction. It is also possible that Junior Yadav may resign from the post of the Chief Minister on his own. However, sources say that Akhilesh wants to fight to the finish to claim the SP name and the cycle symbol.
- Akhilesh Yadav can also choose to ask for his father's forgiveness and patch up with him. However, the chances of this happeneing appear dull right now.
- According to sources from the Centre, the possibility of President's rule in the state can also not be ruled out.
- The Governor's role will also become crucial in the coming days as Mulayam said at his hurriedly called press conference that the new chief minister will be chosen by the SP.
- According to constitutional experts, there is no constitution related crisis in the state as of now. Meanwhile, Governor Ram Naik said, "I am keeping a watch on the issue." Asked if he viewed the developments as crisis in the ruling party, Naik said, "it is an intra-party issue."
- Raj Bhavan is on high alert and the leaves of the entire staff for the time being have been scrapped.
Notably, in a fast-paced development, the Peoples’ Party of Arunachal (PPA) late last night on December 29 suspended Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein and five other party MLAs from the primary membership of the party temporarily with immediate effect for alleged anti-party activities.
