New Delhi: On the occasion of 73rd Republic Day, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday congratulated Jammu and Kashmir Police for showing valour and commitment in fighting against terrorism.

Shah took to Twitter and wrote, "J&K Police has been the spearhead of India's fight against terrorism. It is a matter of immense pride to the entire nation, that the @JmuKmrPolice has won the largest share, 115, of the gallantry awards today on Republic Day. This reflects their valour and commitment".

Giving assurance to the Police personnel, Shah said that the Modi govt is committed to recognising and honouring our brave police personnel.

“I congratulate all J&K Police personnel on this momentous achievement and salute their bravery. PM Narendra Modi-led central government stands committed to recognising and honouring our brave police personnel,” said Union Home Minister.

Meanwhile, he also heaped his praise on martyred Assistant Sub Inspector Babu Ram of the Jammu and Kashmir Police who killed three terrorists during an operation in Srinagar on August 29, 2020.

"I bow to ASI Babu Ram’s unparalleled valour and sacrifice for which he was awarded the ‘Ashok Chakra’ this Republic Day. His name will remain a source of inspiration not only for the forces but for all Indians," he said in his tweet.

He also added, "ASI Babu Ram was a member of the @JmuKmrPolice police team that launched an intelligence based operation against a group of terrorists on the outskirts of Srinagar, J&K. He led from the front and made the supreme sacrifice in the operation in which 3 terrorists were neutralised."

On the eve of 73rd Republic Day, President Ramnath Kovind posthumously awarded Ashok Chakra, which is India’s highest peacetime military decoration awarded for valour, courageous action, or self-sacrifice away from the battlefield, to Babu Ram at the Republic Day parade. Babu Ram’s widow Rina Rani and son Manik received the award from President Kovind.

Out of 939 awards delivered on the occasion of Republic Day 2022, 189 personnel have received Police Medal for Gallantry (PMG), 88 President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (PPM), and 662 Police Medal for Meritorious Service (PM).
