Jaipur: Rajasthan police arrested Bharatiya Janata Party MP Kirori Lal Meena on Sunday after he hoisted a tribal white-colored flag amid prohibitory orders at the Ambagarh Fort in Jaipur. Police said that Meena has been arrested for disturbing the peace in the area.
Despite heavy deployment of police, Kirodi Lal Meena managed to sneak inside the Ambagarh Fort with his supporters and hoisted the flag after which police took steps and detained him.
"Along with dozens of brave Meena youth, we have overcome several challenges to enter the Ambagarh Fort and hoisted the flag of the Meena community," Kirodi Lal Meena said in a video shot by supporters, before the police arrived.
What is the controversy?
Tension engulfed the Meena community in Jaipur after a group from the community allegedly led by independent MLA Ramkesh Meena removed and tore a saffron flag at the fort, accusing Hindu outfits of trying to tamper with the tribal culture. The Ambagarh Fort has a temple visited by members of the Meena community.
After a video of the removal of the saffron flag went viral, Hindu outfits raised objections.
BJP MP Kirodi Meena accused Ramkesh Meena of misleading the community and creating disharmony. He said that Meenas were Hindus and Ramkesh Meena was distorting facts.
He had announced that he would unfurl a flag in the Ambagarh Fort on Sunday, following which there was heavy deployment of police. However, Meena tricked the security officers and entered the fort, releasing a video of the flag hoisting.
Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhra Raje has slammed Congress over Kirodi Lal Meena's arrest.
Also, Congress MLA Ramkesh Meena has refuted Kirodi Lal Meena's allegation and said that his group had not removed and torn the saffron flag at the fort.
