Leaders of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi tore into the NDA-led Centre over the issue of tariffs imposed by the US and China border row. Speaking in the Lower House, Gandhi said that bowing head before foreigners has been BJP's history and culture.
"The BJP bowing its head in front of foreign people is part of their history and culture," Gandhi said. "They need to reveal what they are going to do on US tariffs and the Chinese land issue," questioned the Congress MP.
Referring to the border issue between India and China, Gandhi claimed that Beijing was now sitting on over 4,000 sq km of our territory" seeking the status quo.
"20 jawans attained martyrdom in 2020, but I was shocked to see our Foreign Secretary cutting a cake with the Chinese envoy. China is sitting on 4,000 sq km of our territory. It is a known fact. There should be status quo, and we should get our land back," the Raebareli MP said.
US Tariffs To 'Completely Devastate' Indian Economy
On the 27 per cent tariffs imposed by the US on India, Gandhi said the move by the Trump administration is going to "completely devastate" the Indian economy, particularly sectors like the auto industry, pharmaceuticals and agriculture.
"They (India) are charging us 52% and we charge almost nothing for years and years and decades," Trump said at the White House as he announced the reciprocal tax.
Other Asian countries have also been slapped with the reciprocal tariffs including China (34% on top of a 20% tax announced earlier), Vietnam (46%), Taiwan (64%), Japan (46%), South Korea (50%), Thailand (72%), Bangladesh (74%), and Pakistan (58%).
Other countries that have been imposed with such tariffs include the European Union (39%), United Kingdom (10%), Israel (33%), Australia (10%), UAE (10%), Saudi Arabia (10%), and Ukraine (10%).
