Senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is set to get a new residence in the national capital. According to PTI sources, Gandhi, who had to vacate his official bungalow after being disqualified from the Lower House last year, has been offered Bungalow No. 5, Sunehri Bagh Road, by the House Committee.
The buzz around the residence he is set to get gained traction after his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra visited Bungalow No. 5, Sunehri Bagh Road.
The former Congress chief has been offered the bungalow and a response is awaited from his end, PTI reported, citing Parliamentary sources. Since Gandhi became an MP, his residence had been 12, Tughlaq Lane.
However, he had vacated that house after he was disqualified from Lok Sabha last year, following his conviction in a defamation case.
The Congress leader then moved into the 10, Janpath residence of his mother Sonia Gandhi and has been living there even after his disqualification was revoked.
With Gandhi becoming the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, he is entitled to a Type 8 bungalow as he holds the rank of a Cabinet minister.
Rahul Gandhi Lok Sabha Disqualification
Last year in March, Rahul Gandhi faced disqualification as a member of the Lok Sabha. The action came after a court in Gujarat found him guilty in a defamation case related to his comments about the 'Modi surname.'
Consequently, he was handed a two-year prison sentence leading to the expulsion of his Lok Sabha membership under the Representation of the People Act, 1951. He was reinstated as a Lok Sabha Member in August of the same year after the Supreme Court stayed the order of conviction in the 'Modi Surname' defamation case on Friday.
