Shillong: A moderate earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale hit the northeastern states on Sunday morning, an official said.

There were no reports of any casualty or damage, the official said.

The tremor was felt at 7.27 a.m. with an epicentre determined at Meghalaya's West Khasi Hill district, an official from the regional seismological centre said here.

The seven northeastern states -- Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur -- are considered as the sixth major earthquake-prone belt in the world.
