According to newsagency PTI, police in the tourist state have asked its personnel to arrest people who are found drinking in public places.

Superintendent of Police (North Goa) Karthik Kashyap on Wednesday said he has given instructions to arrest people found drinking in open under section 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The instruction was given after a meeting between members of general public, representatives from the tourism sector and the police at Calangute police station.

- The ban on consumption of liquor in public places is to curb the problem of nuisance caused by people in inebriated state.
- There have been number of cases of drink & drowning cases of tourists.
- The bottles/cans left behind on beaches, which are many a times broken/damaged & gets hidden beneath the sand cause injuries to visitors.
- Reduction in road accident cases
- The move can also boost the state’s image as more family-friendly tourist destination.
