Patna: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA and Bihar cabinet leader Neeraj Singh Bablu on Wednesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to pass a law to check the population growth in the country. While speaking to reporters, the BJP MLA expressed concerns over the 'alarming spike' in country's population and also requested the Prime Minister to bring in the 'Population Control' law and implement it strictly as he said it would be beneficial for the country.

"Looking at how the population is increasing, Population Control law should be brought in and implemented across the country. I urge Prime Minister to execute this. It would be for the country's benefit only," the Bihar MLA said.

This is not for the first time that a BJP leader has pressed for the population control law. Earlier this month, MP of the saffron party and Rajya Sabha member Anil Agarwal too urged PM Modi to take up the bill and introduce it in the next Parliament session.

In his letter to the PM, Agarwal also stated that controlling the population is the need of the hour and that one of the ways to make India ‘Atmanirbhar‘ or self-reliant is to make this bill a law.

The Bill was first introduced in 2019 as the Population Control Bill, 2019 or Population Regulation Bill, 2019 in the Rajya Sabha in July. The initially proposed bill was signed by 125 MPs. With certain amendments brought to the Bill, it now puts forth a two-child only policy.

The Bill also states that if the couple adheres to this policy they would be given many government-based incentives. Senior BJP leader Giriraj Singh from Bihar has many a times pressed for the need of Population Control Bill.

Even PM Modi, during his Independence Day speech in 2019, had pitched for smaller families in order to tackle "population explosion" in the country and also praised people who are already contributing to the cause by keeping their families small and said that they are observing a form of patriotism.
