NEW DELHI: Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's condition continues to remain the same. He is critical and on life support systems, said AIIMS statement in its latest medical bulletin. Vajpayee was admitted to AIIMS on June 11 with kidney tract infection, chest congestion, urinary tract infection and low urine output. The 93-year-old BJP leader, a diabetic, has one functional kidney. He had suffered a stroke in 2009 that weakened his cognitive abilities. Subsequently, he developed dementia. On Wednesday AIIMS said, "Vajpayee's condition has worsened over the last 24 hours. His condition is critical and he is on life support system."

Since Wednesday, several political leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi had visited the AIIMS to take stock of the situation and enquire about Vajpayee's condition. Modi reached the hospital at around 7.15 pm and spent about 50 minutes there. After Modi, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal and BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi also paid a visit. Earlier in the evening, Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani had visited the hospital to check on Vajpayee.

BJP chief Amit Shah, Union Health Minister J P Nadda, were also at AIIMS, while Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, and Union ministers Prakash Javadekar are expected to visit the premier medical institute soon.
