The Central government has asked a complete action-taken report from the Punjab government about the security failure that happened during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the state on January 5, last year, according to official sources, news agency ANI reported.


According to sources, the Punjab government has received a letter from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) asking a detailed report on the enforcement steps taken against the wrongdoers.


According to information acquired, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla asked Punjab Chief Secretary Vijay Kumar Janjua to submit the action taken report while emphasising the Punjab government's tardiness in taking remedial action against inefficient individuals.


According to sources, the letter, which urged that the findings be disseminated as soon as possible, was sent earlier this month.


According to a report submitted six months ago by the Supreme Court-appointed inquiry committee, Anirudh Tewari, the state's then-chief secretary, S Chattopadhyaya, the police chief, and other top officials were indicted for failing to maintain security during PM Modi's visit to Punjab on January 5, 2022.


Soon after the security breach, the MHA formed a three-member committee and summoned more than a dozen senior Punjab Police personnel, including the director general of the Punjab Police, Siddharth Chattopadhyaya, the ADGP for Punjab, the IGP for Patiala, and the DIG for Ferozpur. They were in charge of the Prime Minister's security during his visit to Ferozpur in Punjab on January 5.


The MHA then formed a three-person committee led by S Suresh, IG, Special Protection Group, Balbir Singh, Joint Director (IB), and Sudhir Kumar Saxena, Cabinet Secretariat Secretary (Security).


After the breach in Prime Minister Modi's security during his visit to Punjab on January 5, the Center is considering taking action against Punjab Police officials under the Special Protection Group (SPG) Act.


Under Section 14 of the SPG Act, the state government is responsible for providing all support to the SPG during the PM's mobility.
