Significance of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti

On February 19, the birth anniversary of Shivaji Maharaj is celebrated in Maharashtra in a spectacle manner with cultural dance and plays.

Shivaji Maharaj was a fearless king in the 17th century who fought many battles against the Mughals and established many grand forts. He is considered to be the first Indian emperor to introduce the concept of Naval forces.

His birth anniversary was first announced in 1870 when Mahatma Jyotirao Phule discovered the Maratha Emperor’s tomb in Raigad. Since then the day is celebrated as a festival across Maharashtra. It is also observed as a state holiday.
