Parliament Winter Session 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech in the Lok Sabha on Saturday, during a debate on the 75 years of the adoption of the Constitution, has sparked sharp reactions from opposition leaders while drawing strong support from BJP members. The over 110-minute speech included 11 resolutions, which the Prime Minister described as essential for strengthening the country’s unity and development.
Samajwadi Party MP Akhilesh Yadav criticised the Prime Minister’s remarks, describing them as “a very long speech” filled with “the pledge of 11 jumlas.” The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister listed Rs 25 Lakhs in bank accounts, doubling farmers' income, two crore jobs, GST and Aginveer scheme as 'jumla'.
He added, “Those who talk about dynastic politics, their party is full of dynasties. The truth is that the reservation of SC/ST, OBC, and Dalits has been taken away. The day will soon come when caste census will be held, and people will get their rights and respect as per their population.”
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also lambasted the speech, terming it boring and comparing it to "a double period of mathematics in school." She remarked, “The PM has not spoken one thing which is new. He has bored us... I had thought the PM would say something new, something nice.” She also questioned the BJP’s stance on corruption, asking why the party refuses to allow discussions on the Adani issue in Parliament.
Adding to the criticism, Congress MP KC Venugopal accused the Prime Minister of engaging in a blame game against Congress. He told news agency ANI, “There is nothing new in his speech... Their government is now running for Adani. They are talking about the Constitution but trying to use it to give monopoly to one person.”
BJP And Allies Laud PM Modi's Speech, Say He 'Showed Mirror' To Congress
Meanwhile, BJP leaders strongly defended the Prime Minister’s speech. BJP MP Jagdambika Pal said, “He exposed the truth and reality of Congress... He highlighted how Babasaheb Ambedkar was insulted by then PM Jawaharlal Nehru and the Congress party.” Pal also praised PM Modi for initiating the celebration of Constitution Day.
Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh echoed similar sentiments, stating, “The PM showed the Congress party a mirror. Since independence, they have torn apart the Constitution and tainted it.”
Giriraj Singh, another Union Minister, commended the Prime Minister for presenting 11 pledges for the country, claiming they reflect a commitment to the poor and a rejection of dynastic politics. "PM Modi exposed how Congress party tore apart the Constitution. He said that the amendments we made to the Constitution were for the poor. He presented the 11 pledges that should be taken by the country, by Parliament. He dealt a blow to dynasty...Congress stalled UCC. We will bring it."
