Panic ensnared Gujarat’s Ahmedabad as three school received bomb threats over email, prompting institutions to hurriedly evacuate students to safety, news agency ANI reported. No suspicious items have been discovered at school so far. However, police investigation is still on.
The threat emails were apparently sent from the Russian domain: 'mail.ru', which was also the source of the bomb threat emails received by over 100 schools in Delhi-NCR last week, news 18 reported.
On Wednesday morning, around 130 schools in the Delhi-NCR received bomb threat emails, triggering a quick evacuation of students from campuses. According to cops, the email addressed to schools in Delhi-NCR came from a server in Russia.
The domain of emails was traced back to Russia by the Delhi Police's anti-terror unit special cell, and it was assumed to have been created using the dark web - encrypted internet material that allows users to disguise their identity and whereabouts from others.
According to a police officer, the threat was issued from the email address: 'sawariim@mail.ru'. The terror group Islamic State (IS) has regularly exploited the Arabic word "sawarim" in their propaganda movies over the last several years, according to the official.
Of the 254 schools, 242 were in Delhi, four in Noida, two in Ghaziabad, and six in Gurugram, with the threat affecting thousands of kids in all four cities. Delhi Public Schools, Sankskriti School, Amity International, Bal Bharati Public Schools, GD Goenka, and DAV Public Schools were among the major institutions in the city to be affected.
“Some schools in Delhi received bomb threats through email. Responding to the situation, Delhi Police conducted thorough checks of all such schools as per protocol. However, nothing objectionable has been found so far. It appears that these calls seem to be hoax,” a Delhi Police spokesperson said.
