Mumbai: In a big setback to Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), the Chief Election Commissioner of Maharashtra cancelled their registration in the state along with 191 other political parties.
The Election Commission took the drastic step after the AIMIM failed to furnish income and funds details.
This means Owaisi’s party will not be able to contest BMC elections due in February next year.
Meanwhile, former IAS officer Uttam Khobragade's Republican Party of India was also derecognized.
They also cannot contest BMC poll in February 2017.
