The impeachment process against Justice Yashwant Varma has gained considerable momentum as Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed on Sunday that more than 100 MPs have already signed the motion. The central government will bring an impeachment motion against Justice Varma, who landed in trouble after burnt cash was discovered at his residence, in the upcoming Monsoon Session.
"The signature (collection) is underway, and it has crossed 100 already," Rijiju confirmed when asked about the status of status of required signatures for Justice Verma’s impeachment.. On being questioned whether the Parliament would address the issue in the upcoming monsoon session scheduled to start on July 21, Rijiju said: "In the Justice Varma case, the process will be undertaken together by all parties. This is not the move by the Government alone." "I can't comment on any business in terms of priority until and unless the matter is passed by the BAC (Business Advisory Committee) with the approval of the chair. It is difficult to make an announcement outside," he added.
Justice Varma's controversy began in March 2025, when a fire erupted at his official residence in Delhi. After the fire was doused, a large quantity of burnt and partially burnt cash were allegedly found at his residence. This discovery sparked widespread criticism, with calls for proper investigation and accountability.
Justice Varma, on the other hand, has consistently denied having any connection with the cash found at his premises. He has called the entire incident a conspiracy to defame and frame him. At the time of the discovery, he was serving with the Delhi High Court, but was later transferred to the Allahabad High Court.
Since then, he was neither stepped down from his post nor opted for a voluntary retirement, reiterating that he has been falsely implicated and that the process against him is "fundamentally unjust".
He had also submitted a petition before the Supreme Court seeking to quash an in-house inquiry report that found him quilty of misconduct in the alleged cash recovery matter.
All-Party Meeting Ahead Of Monsoon Session
An all-party meeting was called by the central government on Sunday ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament set to commence on Monday, July 21. The session is scheduled to continue until August 21, excluding sittings on August 13 and 14 on account of Independence Day celebrations.
Representatives from additional parties such as the Samajwadi Party (SP), YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), Janata Dal (United), All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), Communist Party of India (Marxist), and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) also attended.
During the meeting, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) MP Mahua Maji articulated concerns regarding the treatment her state receives from the central government. She pointed out that despite being rich in minerals, Jharkhand is one of the poorest states in the country.
The Monsoon Session holds significance as it is the first Parliament session following Operation Sindoor, launched by India on May 7 in reaction to a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives.
