Northeast Monsoon news: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced the onset of the Northeast Monsoon over southeast peninsular India on October 15, 2024. In conjunction with a well-marked low-pressure area over the southern Bay of Bengal, the IMD has forecast isolated extremely heavy rainfall across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and South Interior Karnataka from October 15 to 17, while Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra Pradesh are likely to witness heavy rains on October 15 and 16.


In a bulletin on Tuesday, IMD said, "Southwest monsoon has withdrawn from the entire country today, the 15th October 2024. Simultaneously, the Northeast Monsoon rainfall activity has commenced over the southeast peninsular India today, the 15th October."


With the onset, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in areas such as Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, East Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, as per IMD. Isolated heavy rainfall is predicted for regions like West Madhya Pradesh, Madhya Maharashtra, Rayalaseema, Saurashtra & Kutch, Kerala, and Mahe.


The IMD further confirmed the withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon from the entire country on October 15, marking a clear shift towards the Northeast Monsoon. The well-marked low-pressure system over the south Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a depression within the next 24 hours, moving west-northwestwards towards north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts by October 16.


IMD also highlighted the likelihood of isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal on October 15 and 16, as well as in Rayalaseema, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Yanam on October 16.


Authorities have urged residents in the affected regions to remain cautious and prepared for potential disruptions due to the heavy downpours.


Meanwhile, the heavy rainfall that started on Monday night continued throughout the day in Chennai on Tuesday.
