A seven-hour programme has been planned on May 28 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the new Parliament building. The ceremony will begin with with a havan and puja and end with an address by PM Modi.

However, the inauguration of the new Parliament building, a part of the redevelopment of Central Vista, the nation's power corridor, has run into controversy, with 20 Opposition parties deciding to boycott the event. Around 17 parties, including the TDP, BJD and Mayawati's BSP, will attend the ceremony.

The Opposition parties have argued that the inauguration by PM Narendra Modi by "sidelining" President Droupadi Murmu constituted a "grave insult and direct assault on democracy".
