New Delhi: Launching a vitriolic attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday alleged the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has weakened democracy by bulldozing institutions in eight years and said India needs “Bharat Jodo” now more than ever.

Lauding India’s first prime minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Gandhi said the former was an “institution builder who strengthened our democratic roots”.

“IIT   IIM    LIC ITI    BHEL   NID BARC  AIIMS   ISRO SAIL    ONGC  DRDO...Nehru ji was an institution builder who strengthened our democratic roots. In 8 yrs, BJP has weakened democracy by bulldozing institutions.  India needs #BharatJodo now more than ever,” he tweeted.

Earlier in the day, the former Congress president paid tribute to Pandit Nehru on his 58th death anniversary.

Gandhi called Nehru an “immortal son of India” and said that his “ideas, politics and vision” are still relevant in the country.

The Congress leader also posted a video, paying respects to the former prime minister.

“58 years since his passing, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's ideas, politics, and vision for our Nation are as relevant as they have ever been. May the values of this immortal son of India always guide our actions & conscience,” he wrote on the micro-blogging platform.

The Congress leaders, including party chief Sonia Gandhi, earlier paid floral tributes to Pandit Nehru on his death anniversary at his memorial ‘Shanti Van’ in the national capital.

Pandit Nehru was among the key leaders of the Indian National Congress (INC) who participated in India’s freedom struggle.

As the prime minister, he held office between August 1947 and May 1964.

He breathed his last on May 27, 1964.
