Several locals of the city took to Twitter and reported that a loud sound was heard by people in the area forcing them to come out and see what happened. As per reports, it happened around 10:20 pm.

While the reasons being speculated include earthquake as well as a sonic boom, according to local media reports, it was caused by a dynamite blast in a stone quarry in Hunasodu village. The blast is reported to have been from a lorry that was carrying dynamites.

Besides Shivamogga, the sound was also said to have been heard in the Koppa and NR Pura areas of Chikkamagaluru district.
