New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reviewed the preparedness for roll-out of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) from April 1, 2017, and asked departments and ministries concerned to take all steps to adhere to the timeline.

An official statement issued on Thursday said the Prime Minister held a meeting to review the preparedness to roll out the GST. The meeting was attended by Finanance Minister Arun Jaitley and many others.

"In order to ensure that there is no slippage on date of implementation of GST from April 1, 2017, the Prime Minister reviewed the progress made on various steps needed for the roll-out of GST relating to preparation of Model GST laws and rules to be framed, establishment of IT infrastructure for both Centre and States, training of officers of Central and State Governments and outreach for awareness of trade and industry," the release said.

Goods and Services Tax is a comprehensive indirect tax on manufacture, sale and consumption of goods and services throughout India, and will replace taxes levied by the central and state governments.
