Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga said on Friday that his administration is preparing to rescue individuals from the state who are stuck in violence-torn Manipur. Zoramthanga also guaranteed the protection of Manipuris residing in Mizoram. He asked the national and Manipur governments to do more to put an end to the northeastern state's mob violence.
"A close and dedicated watch is being maintained on the prevailing law and order situation in Manipur and the safety and security of people from Mizoram presently in Manipur and Imphal City," Mizoram Home Department stated in a public notice, ANI reported.
"Information is also being obtained for making arrangements for evacuation of people of Mizoram now stranded in Imphal and other parts of Manipur requiring evacuation by flight from Imphal Airport to Lengpui Airport. Helpline numbers have been activated in this regard at Police Headquarters (PHQ), Aizawl, Mizoram," the notice further reads.
According to the notice, anyone requiring any sort of assistance may contact State police control room at "Landline 0389 233 4327, 0389 233 5359 Mobile +919862899962 (Whatsapp) Mobile +918787784958."
"Efforts are on to charter flights to evacuate the state's residents, especially students and employees stranded in the neighbouring state," the Mizoram chief minister said in a statement, PTI reported.
Zoramthanga stated that he has requested Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh to secure the safe repatriation of tribal people stuck in Imphal to their own villages in Churachandpur and other districts of the state, and he has promised to take the necessary actions.
On Thursday, he wrote to Biren Singh and spoke with him on the phone about the violent conflicts in several districts of Manipur. He also talked with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, pleading with him to send more central armed personnel to Manipur.
Meanwhile, the Mizoram home department has assured Meiteis living in the state of their safety.
The Meiteis are the predominant population in Manipur's valley districts, and their desire for ST status sparked the current conflict in the northeastern state.
It also urged the community to take peace-building initiatives in order to restore normality in Manipur's violent regions.
