Will Resign If Proven I Called Amit Shah Over TMC's National Party Status: Mamata Banerjee

Bengal CM and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee said she will resign if it is proven that she called up Amit Shah over TMC losing its national party status.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday trashed the rumour of her calling up Union Home Minister Amit Shah after Trinamool Congress lost the national party status. Banerjee said she would resign if the rumour is proven to be true.

"I shall resign if it is proven that I called up Amit Shah over TMC's national party status. The rumour of me calling Amit Shah four times is completely false... TMC was a national party and will remain so. My party's name will remain All India Trinamool Congress," Mamata Banerjee said.

The Election Commission on April 10 revoked the national party status of the Trinamool Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and Communist Party of India (CPI). The TMC said that it was considering legal options to challenge the decision of the EC.

Banerjee further said: "Those who are spreading such rumours will have to issue an apology. I understand politics very well. Four of our MLAs have been arrested by central agencies as part of a conspiracy against me."

Reacting to Mukul Roy's claim of not being a part of TMC, Banerjee said: "It's his affair. Mukul Roy is a BJP MLA and it's totally up to him. You should ask Subhranshu, his son, who registered a missing complaint, which is very serious. But this is a very small issue, we don't care."

Veteran Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mukul Roy on Wednesday said he was always with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and there was no question of resigning from TMC as he is not even a part of it, news agency ANI reported. Roy, whose family says is suffering from dementia and Parkinson's disease, surfaced dramatically in Delhi after the missing person complaint was filed, and claimed that he is a "BJP MP and MLA" and wants to meet Amit Shah.

The founding member of the TMC joined the BJP in 2017 following differences with the TMC leadership. He was made BJP national vice president in 2020. Roy won from the Krishnanagar North assembly seat on a BJP ticket in 2021 and returned to the TMC just a month after the results were announced, complaining of "ill-treatment" by the saffron party. He, however, didn't resign as an MLA. 

She further said that BJP is the most corrupt party of India. "BJP will not be able to cross 200 seats in 2024 Lok Sabha polls," Mamata Banerjee said.
