New Delhi: Over 90 per cent of fake new currency notes of Rs 2,000 and Rs 500 denomination seized were from Gujarat, the Centre told the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
Fake new notes with a face value of Rs 6.2 crore have been seized across the country since Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced demonetisation on November 8. He had said that one of the reasons to scrap the old notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 was to stop the flow of fakes.

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, junior home minister Kiren Rijiju said fake new notes with a face value of Rs 5.7 crore were seized from Gujarat alone. Bengal and Assam are among the other states where such seizures were made.
Out of the total seized currency, 27,949 were in the denomination of Rs 2000 and 12,956 in new Rs 500 notes.
Paramilitary forces and other agencies have seized fake new notes of denominations of Rs 2000 and Rs 500 in the border states post demonetisation," Rijiju said.
He added that all these cases were being investigated to find out the source of the fake notes.
