Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, in a cryptic tweet, hit back at the BJP after its spokesperson accused her of "hiding her expensive bag" during a discussion on price rise in the Lok Sabha. Reports said that it was a Louis Vuitton bag priced at more than Rs 1.5 lakh.
Mahua Moitra posted a collage of her pictures with her handbag and tweeted, "Jholewala fakir in Parliament since 2019.
Jhola leke aye the...jhola leke chal padenge...(Came with a bag, will leave with it)."
Moitra's tweet was an apparent jibe at a similar remark by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a 2016 rally. "Hum to fakeer aadmi hai, jhola utha ke chal padenge," PM Modi had said.
Moitra's remarks come after BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla on Monday tweeted a clip in which the TMC MP could be seen picking her handbag from her side and putting it under the desk while Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar was speaking on price rise in Lok Sabha.
"Marie Antoinette Mahau Moitra hiding her expensive bag during a discussion on price rise -- hypocrisy has a face and its this! A party that believes in TMC -- Too Much Corruption discusses price rise after not cutting VAT and alliance with UPA that gave run away inflation of 10% plus," Poonawalla wrote along with the video.
For the uninitiated, Marie Antoinette was the last Queen of France before the French Revolution. When she was told that her starving peasant subjects had no bread, the Queen nonchalantly said, "Let them eat cake".
Another BJP leader, Shaina Nana Chudasama, also took a dig at Mahua Moitra, saying "aur kitne acche din chahiye?"
"TMC MP Mahua Moitra hides her expensive Louis Vuitton bag, while one of her colleagues was giving her parliament speech on price rise. The handbag is believed to be of Rs1.6 Lakh! Aur Kitne Acche din Chahiye Mahua Moitra?" she tweeted.
The incident soon became a subject of online discussion among netizens. Some netizens also supported Mahua Moitra.
Actor Swara Bhasker defended Mahua Moitra, saying the TMC MP had a "flourishing corporate career" and she bought branded items from her "own hard-earned money".
"Another unimaginative attempt by #Poopindia to discredit an independent vocal woman...Doesn’t seem like Mahua Moitra ever tried to 'hide' her branded bag...She had a flourishing corporate career and bought branded items with her own hard earned money," Bhasker tweeted.
