Mumbai Braces For Heavy Rainfall As BMC Issues 'Orange Alert' Following IMD Predictions

The BMC announced that it has upgraded Mumbai's weather forecast to 'orange alert,' indicating the possibility of heavy rain within the next 24 hours following IMD predictions.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said on Saturday (June 23) following India Meteorological Department's (IMD) forecast, it has upgraded the weather forecast for Mumbai to an 'orange alert', indicating the possibility of heavy rainfall in the city over the next 24 hours. The BMC also urged residents and authorities to remain vigilant and take the necessary precautions to ensure their safety in the face of the expected weather conditions. Following a significant delay in the monsoon, several areas of Mumbai received rain today. As a result, parts of the city experienced severe waterlogging.

In a tweet, the BMC wrote: "As informed by IMD, in view of continuous and more spells expected, Mumbai is being upgraded to Orange Alert for the next 24 hours. Citizens are requested to take necessary precautions."

The monsoon has advanced up to Alibag in Maharashtra's Raigad district, according to IMD, and is expected to move further and hit Mumbai in the next 48 hours.

Heavy Rainfall Leads To Waterlogging In Parts Of Mumbai

After a prolonged monsoon delay, Mumbai experienced a downpour today, resulting in heavy waterlogging in various parts of the city. Vehicles were stranded in the waterlogged Andheri underground, according to videos that surfaced online. The BMC and the traffic police issued traffic advisories in response to the situation, and the Andheri subway was temporarily closed for vehicular movement due to waterlogging caused by the constant rain.

"The southwest monsoon has advanced further into some more parts of the Central Arabian Sea, some more parts of Maharashtra, remaining parts of Karnataka, Telangana, and Chhattisgarh, some parts of East Madhya Pradesh, some parts of Uttar Pradesh, most parts of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, some parts of Haryana, and some parts of Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh," the IMD said.

According to the report, the 'Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM)' now passes through Alibag, Solapur, Udgir, Nagpur (in Maharashtra), Mandla, Sonbhadra, Buxar, Siddharthnagar, Pantnagar, Bijnor, Yamunanagar, Una, and Dras.

Rainfall is expected to increase gradually over the next four to five days. The IMD had previously issued a 'yellow alert' for Mumbai as well as the neighbouring regions of Palghar and Thane on June 26 and 27.
