New Delhi: As many as sixteen migrants were killed after coming under a goods train in Aurangabad district, Maharashtra early in the morning today. Reports say that the tragic incident occurred at 4 am between Jalna and Bhusawal, when they were sleeping on the tracks. The workers who were employed in factories in Jalna were travelling back to their native place in Madhya Pradesh. They had walked from Jalna to Bhusawal and were planning to reach Chhattisgarh from there.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also offered his condolences and has posted his message in a tweet. He wrote that he is  ‘Extremely anguished by the loss of lives due to the rail accident in Aurangabad, Maharashtra’.

Modi has also said that he has talked to the Railway Minister Piyush Goyal and is monitoring the situation. The prime minister also said that ‘all possible assistance required is being provided.’

Due to the lockdown many migrant workers found themselves unemployed, out of money, and stranded in various parts of the country. Fearing the worst, many decided to walk long distances to reach their homes. From May 1, the government stated Shramik Special trains to transport migrants to their native places. One of the first trains to carry migrant workers was the train starting from Lingampally in Telangana to Hatia in Jharkhand. This was also the first one to run by the railways after the services were suspended due to the nationwide lockdown.
