Lok Sabha Session: The Bharatiya Janata Party has nominated Om Birla as its nominee for the post of Speaker for the 18th Lok Sabha. The move comes a day after the saffron party held deliberations with its allies for the key position. He will file his nomination papers at 11:30 AM.
On the election of the Speaker for the Lower House, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi said that the entire Opposition would support the Speaker but the convention is that the Deputy Speaker post should be given to the opposition.
"Today it is written in the newspaper that PM Modi has said that the Opposition should cooperate with the Govt constructively. Rajnath Singh called Mallikarjun Kharge and he asked him to extend support to the Speaker. The entire Opposition said that we would support the Speaker but the convention is that the Deputy Speaker post should be given to the opposition. Rajnath Singh said that he would call back Mallikarjun Kharge but he has not done that yet...PM Modi is asking for cooperation from Opposition but our leader is getting insulted," Rahul Gandhi said.
Samajwadi Party (SP) Chief and MP Akhilesh Yadav said, "Everything will be out soon... The demand of the Opposition was that the Deputy Speaker (of the Lok Sabha) should be of the Opposition... Our party's opinion is also the same."
The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha started on June 24, which witnessed Prime Minister Narendra Modi take oath as the Member of Parliament for the third time in a row. The 18th Lok Sabha session was held on Monday after the Lok Sabha polls concluded on June 4.
