First session of the 18th Lok Sabha, after formation of the new government at the Centre, will begin from June 24 and will continue till July 3, said Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday. The election for the Lok Sabha Speaker will take place on June 26, two days after the session will commence.
Similarly, the 264th session of Rajya Sabha, first after the recently-concluded Lok Sabha polls will start on June 27 and conclude on July 3, along with Lok Sabha, Rijiju said.
"First Session of 18th Lok Sabha is being summoned from 24.6.24 to 3.7.24 for oath/affirmation of newly elected Members, Election of Speaker, President’s Address and discussion thereon. 264th Session of Rajya Sabha will commence on 27.6.24 and conclude on 3.7.24," Rijiju said in his post.
The joint sitting of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will be addressed by President Drouapdi Murmu on June 27.
The last session of the 17th Lok Sabha which was a Budget session was held between January 31 and February 10 this year. A total of 221 Bills were passed by both the Houses of the Parliament and became acts during the 17th Lok Sabha.
One of the key events of the 17th Lok Sabha were abrogation of certain sections of Article 370. The State of Jammu and Kashmir was reorganised with the formation of two Union Territories, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
Three landmark bills relating to criminal justice system in the country were also passed by both the Houses of Parliament in 17th Lok Sabha. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 and the Bharatiya Sakshya Bill, 2023 werr passed to replace the Indian Penal Code, 1860, the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872.
