Weather Update | Respite From Heatwave As Rainfall Over Several Regions In Next Few Days: IMD

Isolated heavy rainfall is likely to occur in certain hilly regions, including the northeastern states, during the next few days.

New Delhi: Several regions in India may experience respite from extreme heatwave conditions as rainfall is likely to occur in those areas during the next few days, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

Heavy Rainfall Over Northeast India

On May 2, isolated heavy rainfall is very likely over Arunachal Pradesh, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim, the IMD said in an update. 

The same weather conditions are likely over Assam and Meghalaya from May 2 to May 4. 

Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are likely to receive isolated heavy rainfall on May 3 and 4.

Rainfall With Thunderstorm In Bihar, Odisha & Other Regions

Meanwhile, Bihar, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha are likely to receive scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, during the next five days. The speed of the gusty winds can reach as high as 40 to 50 kilometres per hour.

Hailstorms Over J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand

From May 3 to 5, scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are likely to occur in certain regions of the country. Isolated hailstorms are likely to occur over Jammu and Kashmir on May 3, and over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on May 3 and 4, according to the IMD. The speed of the gusty winds can reach as high as 40 to 50 kilometres per hour. 

Rainfall With Thunderstorms Over Delhi, Rajasthan & Other Areas

During the next four days, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan are likely to receive isolated light rainfall with dust storms, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds.

During the next two days, strong dust-raising surface winds are likely to prevail over most parts of Northwest India.

Rainfall With Thunderstorms Over Southern India

During the next five days, isolated to scattered rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning are likely over Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. 

Heavy Rainfall Over Andaman And Nicobar Islands

However, isolated pockets of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are likely to receive heavy rainfall on May 5 due to a cyclonic circulation which could form over South Andaman Sea and its neighbourhood the previous day. According to the meteorological department, a pressure area is likely to form over South Andaman Sea and its neighbourhood around May 6, which is likely to become more prominent over the next 24 hours. 

Also, squally winds, with speeds reaching as high as 40 to 60 kilometres per hour, are likely over southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining South Andaman Sea on May 5 and May 6. Squally winds are sudden, strong winds which often cause brief, violent storms. The IMD has advised fishermen to not venture into these areas. 

However, heatwave conditions will prevail over regions such as Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and West Rajasthan on May 1 and 2, over Vidarbha from May 1 to 3, and over Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, southern Uttar Pradesh, Kutch, and East Rajasthan on May 1, the IMD said.
