Kolkata Municipality Election Results: Counting of votes on all the 144 seats of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is underway from 8 am. The ruling party TMC is leading in 77 wards. While BJP is leading in 4, Congress in 2, Left in 2 and others are leading in 1 ward.
There are a total of 11 counting centres. At every counting centre, counting is taking place at 7 to 10 tables. The counting centres have been given 3 layer security and Section 144 has been imposed within 200 metres around the counting booth. A total of three thousand police personnel have been deployed. Several CCTV cameras have been installed at every counting centre. The counting is being taped as well for future reference. The fate of a total of 950 candidates will be decided.
Violence During Polls
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections were completed on Sunday amid sporadic violence. About 63.37 percent of people exercised their right to vote by 5 p.m. amid sporadic incidents of violence, including one person being injured in a bombing. A total of 453 complaints were received during the voting, while a total of 195 people were arrested. Three people were injured in the violence.
Opposition parties, including BJP, have demanded re-election alleging violence in the elections. The BJP has demanded a re-polling in all the 144 wards alleging that there has been violence and wrong voting during elections. CPM has also demanded re-polling in 17 wards. While TMC had rejected these allegations. The counting of votes today will decide whether the Kolkata Municipal Corporation will be ruled by TMC again or will BJP's mass base increase.
