Kerala Local Body Election Results 2020 HIGHLIGHTS: The LDF looks headed for victory in the local body polls, though Congress-led UDF is giving it a tough fight in municipalities, but the Left parties have gained a wide lead in Panchayats. BJP-led NDA has gained grounds this time. Though the Left Democratic Front was mired in a number of controversies ahead of the civic body polls of the state, the initial trend showed it surpassing its detractors. LDF, which used to showcase a good performance in the civic body polls, banked on the achievements in the development front under the four and half years old rule of Pinarayi Vijayan government, while UDF, during the campaign, focused on various corruption charges against the government and controversies related to the gold smuggling case. With counting of votes
for local body polls in Kerala underway on Wednesday, early trends showed that the ruling CPI(M) led Left Democratic Front was leading in 520 of the total of 941 panchayats.
The LDF was also leading in 10 out of the 14 district panchayats and 108 block panchayats of the total of 152, according to the State Election Commission figures.
The Congress led UDF was ahead in four district panchayats.
Out of the six corporations in the state, the LDF and the UDF were leading in three each.
Left leaders and workers claimed that the "hate campaign" against the CPI(M) through various issues raised by the Opposition Congress and BJP, including the gold smuggling case and other matters, failed to resonate with the people.
"All the hate campaigns against the Left have been proven wrong," senior CPI(M) leader Kodiyeri Balakrishnan told the media.
State Finance Minister T M Thomas Isaac in a tweet said LDF was heading towards a resounding victory in local body elections.

LDF, UDF leading in 3 each out of 6 corporations in Kerala, said the State Election Commission.
LDF candidates have won in the wards of Oommen Chandy (former CM), Ramesh Chennithala (opposition leader), Mullappally Ramachandran (KPCC president), said CPI (M) as the LDF seems headed towards a big victory in local body polls.

Section 144 in some pockets ahead of results

In 2015, the ruling Left front had nearly swept the civic polls by winning 549 village panchayats, 90 block panchayats, 44 municipalities and four corporations.
At the district panchayat level, both UDF and LDF had won 7 seats each.
BJP had come third in terms of wards in 2015 but displayed an impressive performance in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation and Palakkad municipality.

As per the latest update by state election commission, UDF has gained edged over LDF in municipalities and is pitched in a neck and neck battle in corporations:

When it comes to the 14 districts, the Left is leading in 10 and the UDF in four. While in the Block Panchayats, the Left is ahead in 103, the UDF in 48 and the BJP in one. In the Gram Panchayats the Left is ahead in 488 and the UDF in 379 while the BJP in 23. The final results are expected by late afternoon.
Despite facing a host of controversies ahead of the Kerala civic body polls, as counting of votes reached midway on Wednesday, the ruling CPM-led LDF is ahead of its rivals and appears to be consolidating its position.
The opposition Congress-led UDF, which initially was seen putting up a better show in the first round of counting that began at 8 a.m., appears to have slightly dimmed, while the hype created by the BJP is yet to catch on.
This time, the civic body polls have gained comparatively more significance as its result is generally considered to reflect the political mindset of the southern state which would go to assembly polls after some months.
So, despite COIVD-19 protocols and restrictions, the state witnessed a fierce campaign in which everything right from the national politics to state issues became a campaign tool.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan who was spotted at the Kannur airport and appeared to be in high spirits as he can now breathe easy and is expected to meet the media later in the evening.
As per the latest leading/trailing trend put out by the state election commission, the ruling LDF has taken a good lead. It leads in 503 gram panchayats, 110 block panchayats, 39 municipalities and 4 corporations. The UDF is ahea on 380 gram panchayats, 42 block panchayats, 4 district panchayats, 38 municipalities and 2 corporations. The NDA looks headed towards drawing a blank in corporation, block & district panchayats. It leads in 23 gram panchayats and 2 municipalities.

"It was a sure seat. I can't say what happened. There was no problem in the party. There was a problem with the voting machine. That may be the reason for BJP's victory. I've not decided to go to court with voting machine issue so far. Will check what happened exactly," he says
In Palakkad municipality, the only urban body BJP gained last time, the party continues to hold a lead this time too. It is the only municipality where the party is leading right now. Palakkad, a largely rural district, has a good network of RSS workers, which gives BJP its strength.

In a shocker to the LDF, S.Pushpalatha, its mayor candidate in Thiruvananthpuram has lost to NDA candidate by 145 votes. Initial trends on Wednesday showed the ruling CPI-M-led-Left ahead of its detractors, in the local body polls in Kerala.
As per the latest update, the LDF has secured victory in 7 wards.
NDA workers started celebrations, as the alliance is leading in 13 wards.
A total of 21,893 wards in 1,200 local self-governing bodies including 6 corporations, 941 village panchayats, 14 district panchayats and 87 municipalities, went to polls in three phases in the southern state on December 8, 10 and 14.
