New Delhi: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) supremo Sharad Pawar has called a meeting of opposition parties in the national capital on Tuesday in a bid to chalk out a joint strategy to take on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).


The invitations for the meeting have been extended to National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah, Communist Party of India (CPI) leader D. Raja, former chief election commissioner S Y Quraishi and former BJP leader Yashwant Sinha, who joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC) just before the West Bengal Assembly elections, besides others.


Confirming the same, NCP leader Nawab Malik said the meeting will be held at 4 p.m. at Pawar’s official 6, Janpath residence in Delhi.


“The said meeting is rescheduled, it will now be held at 4 pm,” he tweeted.

Malak had earlier informed that the meeting would be held at 11: 30 a.m. to discuss the current situation in the country. 


“Tomorrow Tuesday 22nd June 2021 at 11:30 am, our party President Sharad Pawar saheb will host a meeting at his residence at 6, Janpath in New Delhi. The following prominent political leaders and eminent persons from different sections of society will attend the meeting to (1/3),” Malik tweeted.


“Discuss the current scenario in our country. Yashwant Sinha, Pawan Verma, Sanjay Singh, D Raja, Farooq Abdullah, Justice A P Singh, Javed Akhtar, K T S Tulsi, Karan Thapar, Ashutosh, Adv. Majeed Memon, Vandana Chavan MP, S Y Qureshi former CEC, K C Singh, Sanjay Jha, (2/3),” he wrote on the micro-blogging platform.



“Sudheendra Kulkarni, Colin Gonsalves, Arun Kumar Economist, Ghanshyam Tiwari and Pritish Nandi (3/3),” he said in a series of tweets.



The meeting assumes significance as a united opposition is expected to explore a joint fight against the BJP not just in the 2024 general elections but also in politically crucial Uttar Pradesh, which votes next year.

Earlier in the day, Pawar met political strategist Prashant Kishore for the second time in over the last few weeks.


The NCP supremo meeting Kishor, who strategized for the TMC in the recent West Bengal Assembly polls, has further fuelled speculation of a third front to take on the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the 2024 general elections.
