New Delhi: A group of students of Jawaharlal Nehru Universitry (JNU) including a woman, was reportedly assaulted by local goons near Asola Sanctuary on August 14 and was later mistreated by police in Haryana's Surajkund police station. Four days later to the incident, the sub-inspector who allegedly refused to register the case has been suspended.
According to reports, three out of six friends were returning to Delhi from Faridabad on Monday night. The woman was on a motorcycle with two of her friends, when a man who was seemingly drunk, stopped them and started questioning them. They raised questions on the woman's character and asked how was she related to the men and why were they roaming out at night. The man called his brother and father and then reportedly threatened to rape the woman and kill the men.
The woman also alleged that they took her to a nearby shed where they attempted to assault her, but she was rescued in the meantime by her other friends who had reached to the spot by then.
The group approached a personnel of Haryana police who took them to Surajkund police station where the police officer reportedly misbehaved with them. The girl alleged that the official did not register her complaint. He questioned her character and made her write an apology letter instead.
The group then had to go to Vssant Kunj police station in New Delhi for lodging their complaint.
After facing strong condemnation from media and JNU Students' Union, the sub-inspector was reportedly suspended on the charges of misconduct and for not taking cognisance of the complaint.
The police informed the media that the incident took place at around 9 pm on Monday. The police has reportedly zeroed in on some suspects and arrests are likely to be made soon.
