The gunfight broke out at Khuruk, Srigufwara area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag District in the early hours of Friday.

Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Srigufwara area of the district in south Kashmir after receiving specific intelligence input about the presence of militants, a police official said.

He said the search operation turned into a gunfight after the militants fired upon the forces, who retaliated.

"As the security forces tightened the cordon around hiding militants, they fired, triggering an encounter which is underway," a police officer said.

The gunfight was going on when last reports came in, the official said, adding further details were awaited.

High paced anti-militancy operations are underway in the valley after the Ramzan ceasefire has been called off. Activities of militants had been on a rise ever since government announced suspension of all operations against them for the month of Ramzan.
