Search operations are underway in Jammu after suspected terrorists opened fire from a stand-off distance from outside the base on Monday. An Army personnel was critically injured in the attack after which a massive search operation was launched to track down and neutralise the gunmen.
The assailants fired a few rounds at the Sunjawan Military Station in the outskirts of Jammu at around 10:50 am resulting in critical injuries to the soldier, said a defence spokesperson, reported PTI.
The operation was launched and further details are being ascertained, said the spokesperson without giving any details about the assailant who fired on the sentry post.
The officials had earlier said that a brief firing took place when the suspected terrorists opened a few rounds on one of the army posts guarding one of the biggest security camps in the winter capital.
The firing triggered panic and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the local police rushed to the spot to join the Army in its search operation to hunt down the fleeing terrorists.
While the search operation is still underway, there has been no contact with the terrorists so far, the officials said.
Sunjawan brigade is the largest military base in Jammu which was targeted by Pakistan-backed terrorists on February 10, 2018. Six soldiers and a civilian were killed in the attack. The base is located on the Jammu-Kunjwani bypass that is part of the national highway to Srinagar and is surrounded by densely populated localities of Bhatindi, Jalalabad, Abotabad, and Chowadhi.
The attack comes nearly a fortnight ahead of the Assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir with first phase of polls on September 18.
