New Delhi: A moderate intensity earthquake of magnitude 5.6 shook Kashmir on Tuesday, causing panic among residents who ran out of their homes. The earthquake struck at 10.17 pm and lasted several seconds, officials said. The tremors were felt in Srinagar and other parts of the Kashmir Valley.


The weather department confirmed the reports of the tremors. As per the Indian Meteorological Department, earthquake of magnitude 5.6 occurred on 05-02-2019 in the northwestern Kashmir at 22:17:09 IST, Lat: 34.8 N and Long: 74.3 E, Depth: 80 Km.

DIG North Kashmir said “if anyone receives distress SOS from North Kashmir due to the earthquake, do let us know please. We are also trying to assess things.”

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah tweeted on feeling the tremors. "Srinagar rocks!" he tweeted.

Former cricketer Irfan Pathan also tweeted to share his earthquake experience “Bed moved liked some one shaked it (sic)”
