New Delhi: On Saturday, a militant was gunned down by security forces during an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian region.


According to a police officer, security personnel conducted a cordon and search operation in the Kilbal region of the south Kashmir district after receiving specific information about the presence of militants, PTI reported.


He said that while the forces were conducting searches in the vicinity, insurgents opened fire on them.


"One terrorist neutralized in the encounter that broke out in the Kilbal area of Shopian district. Operation is underway," Kashmir Police Zone was quoted by ANI on its official Twitter handle.






The personnel responded, and an encounter ensued, according to the official, who added that one militant was killed.


He stated that the identity and group affiliation of the deceased ultra is being determined.


The operation is still underway, according to the official.


Earlier this month, two militants, including Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) top commander Salim Parray, were killed in two encounters with security forces in the Harwan area on the outskirts of Srinagar.


The second militant was identified as Hafiz alias Hamza of Pakistan. IGP Kashmir Zone Vijay Kumar said Hamza was involved in the killing of two policemen in Bandipora.


On December 31, three Jaish-e-Mohammed militants were killed by security forces in Srinagar. On December 30, six militants, including two Pakistani nationals, were killed in two encounters in south Kashmir.
