Police officials said that the militants fired upon the police party near Nowgam, injuring three cops who were shifted to 92 Base hospital of the Army, where however, two of them succumbed to grave injuries.
IG Kashmir Vijay Kumar while confirming the attack said that militants belonging to Jaish-e-mohammad were behind the attack.
Police have identified the slain jawans as Ishfaq Ayoub and Fayaz Ahmad, both from IRP’s 20 batallion. While Ayoub had bullet wounds on the right side of chest and leg, Fayaz had injuries on his right thigh.
The injured has been identified as Mohammad Ashraf and he has bullet injuries on his right hand.
"Terrorists fired indiscriminately upon police party near Nowgam Bypass. 03 police personnel injured. They were shifted to hospital for treatment where 02 among them attained martyrdom. Area cordoned off. Further details shall follow," Kashmir Zone Police tweeted.

Earlier on Thursday, the security forces achieved a major breakthrough in eliminating the terror infrastructure in Kashmir after a raid conducted by Army's 50 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and 130 Battalion of CRPF busted three terrorist hideouts at Awantipora.
