New Delhi: Indian conducted a successful test-fire of BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from a stealth guided-missile destroyer of the Indian Navy in Vishakhapatnam on Tuesday. According to Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the missile hit the designated target 'precisely'.

"Advanced sea to sea variant of BrahMos Supersonic Cruise missile was tested from INS Visakhapatnam today. Missile hit the designated target ship precisely," DRDO said in a tweet.

The sea to sea variant of the missile was testfired at the maximum range and hit the target ship with pinpoint accuracy, sources close to news agency ANI said.

BrahMos Aerospace is a joint venture between India and Russia that produces supersonic cruise missile that can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft, or land platforms.

BrahMos missile flies at a speed of 2.8 Mach or almost thrice the speed of sound.

Soon after the test-fire, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the successful launch of the missile reconfirmed the robustness of the Indian Navy's "mission readiness".

"The robustness of @indiannavy mission readiness is reconfirmed today after successful launch of the advanced version of BrahMos Missile from INS Vishakhapatnam today. I congratulate the wonderful team work of @indiannavy @DRDO_India & @BrahMosMissile," Singh tweeted.

BrahMos is the main weapon of Indian Navy warships and has been deployed on almost all of its surface platforms.

Meanwhile, an underwater variant of BrahMos is also being developed which will be used by the submarines of Indian Navy and will also be offered for export to friendly foreign nations.
