The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted heavy rainfall on Wednesday and issued an alert for the southern districts of West Bengal and north-coastal Odisha. IMD also forecasted rains from November 15 to November 17 in east India and northeast India. It further stated that snowfall and light rains were likely in north Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking to news agency ANI, senior IMD scientist Soma Sen said, "A low-pressure area has been formed over the west-central Bay of Bengal. This system will get intensified and go northward. There may be rain on November 15th, 16th, and 17th in east India and northeast India".
She further stated, "There is a possibility of very heavy rains in the southern districts of West Bengal and the districts of north-coastal Odisha. An alert has been issued in these districts. A weak western disturbance is approaching. There may be snowfall and light rains in North Jammu and Kashmir".
Meanwhile, a well-marked low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal sea moved westwards and concentrated into a depression on Wednesday, a Meteorological Department official in Amaravati said, as reported by news agency PTI. The Meteorological Department has forecast rainfall in parts of Andhra Pradesh on Thursday.
On Wednesday, the low pressure weather system from the west-central and adjoining east-central areas of the Bay of Bengal moved west and northwestwards around 8.30 am to develop into the depression.
According to an official press release, the depression is currently centred about 510 km southeast of Visakhapatnam, 650 km southeast of Paradip (Odisha), and 790 km south of Digha (West Bengal).
