The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light to moderate rainfall in Chennai and Bengaluru through June 21, driven by moderate westerlies and southwesterlies prevailing in the lower troposphere.

Chennai To Receive Rainfall

In Chennai, isolated parts of the city are likely to experience light to moderate rain.  According to IMD, "Light / Moderate rain is likely to occur in some areas".

For the next 24 hours, the maximum temperature will likely be 38-39°C while the minimum temperature will be 28-29°C. Overall, IMD also said that light to moderate rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.

Despite the showers, temperatures in Tamil Nadu remain high, with Madurai Airport recording the highest at 40.2°C. Hot and humid conditions are expected to persist in pockets of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Karur Paramathi reported the lowest minimum temperature at 22.0°C among the plains, while regions such as Madurai City, Cuddalore, and Tiruchirappalli also saw maximums above 38°C.

The department also issued a caution that intense rainfall in affected areas may reduce visibility and lead to traffic congestion. Waterlogging, uprooted trees, and fallen branches could disrupt traffic and increase travel time. Uprooted trees may also cause damage to power infrastructure.

Dry Weather To Prevail In Bengaluru

The southwest monsoon remained active over coastal and southern interior Karnataka, bringing rainfall to several districts including Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, Mysuru, Hassan, and Bengaluru Urban and Rural. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast wind speeds of 40–50 kmph in these areas.

However, Bengaluru is expected to remain dry until June 25. “Dry weather likely to prevail over Ballari, Bengaluru (Rural), Bengaluru (Urban), Chikkaballapura, Chitradurga, Chamarajanagar, Ramanagara, Kolar, Mandya, Davangere, Tumakuru and Vijayanagar districts,” the IMD said.
