All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Abdul Salam was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Bihar's Gopalganj district on Monday, news agency ANI reported. Abdul Salam, the party's candidate for the Gopalganj byelections in 2022, was brought to Sadar Hospital after being shot in Turkaha. He died as a result of his injuries while receiving treatment. This is the second time an AIMIM leader has been shot dead in Bihar.

In response to Salam's death, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi lambasted Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over law and order situation in Bihar.

Taking to X, Owaisi stated: "Former Gopalganj by-election candidate cum state secretary Abdul Salam alias Aslam Mukhiya has been shot dead. I pray to Allah to give strength to his family. Last year, in December, our Siwan District President Arif Jamal was shot dead.  Nitish Kumar, if you are done fighting over the power, do some work. Why are only our leaders the target? Will their families get justice?"

Speaking about the attack, Sub-divisional police officer Pranjal Kumar said: "Some bike-borne miscreants shot a person. SIT has been formed and raids are being done to arrest the accused. The deceased is an AIMIM leader. We are working on this case."

Earlier, in December last year, Arif Jamal, the district president of AIMIM, was assassinated by bike-borne criminals in Siwan district. The police apprehended one of the suspects, who is believed to have slain Jamal.
