The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a 'red alert', predicting extremely heavy rainfall in sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Meghalaya, and Bihar on Thursday. The weather department also warned that the intensity of rainfall is likely to increase in the national capital Delhi over the coming days, while light showers and sunny skies are expected over the country's financial centre Mumbai.

A red alert is the most urgent form of alert, signaling rainfall exceeding 204.5 mm within 24 hours.

Meanwhile, incessant rain has resulted in a rise in water levels in several rivers, resulting in floods in 633 villages across 12 districts of Uttar Pradesh. As many as 19 people were killed in rain-related incidents across the state in a day, UP relief department officials said on Wednesday. Teams of the NDRF and the SDRF are coordinating with the local administration to mitigate flood-related issues in the affected areas.
