Government and private schools in Haryana will remain closed on Wednesday (August 16), the state government announced.
In a statement, Haryana's Assistant Director (Academic) For Director Secondary Education said, "On account of the celebrations of Independence Day on 15th August, all Government and Private Schools in Haryana shall remain closed tomorrow, 16th August."
Burj Khalifa in the United Arab Emirates was illuminated in colours of the Tricolour on Independence Day.
On the occasion of India’s 77th Independence Day, Indian Ambassador to the US Taranjit Singh Sandhu said in Washington, “Since the time of independence, we have overcome great odds, and today India stands tall as a shining example of democracy, pluralism and as bright spot in the global economic landscape."
Attacking PM Modi for his 'see you next year at the Red Fort' comment, Congress leader Udit Raj said, "Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said that from the next year, PM Modi will hoist the flag from his residence and not from the Red Fort, it is going to happen. In a corruption case of Rs 70,000 crores, he blamed Praful Patel, Chhagan Bhujbal, and Ajit Pawar. He promised to send them to jail, and now he has made them ministers. Nepal President Ramchandra Paudel extended warm wishes to his Indian counterpart Draupadi Murmu as India celebrates its 77th Independence Day.

BSF Inspector General Ravi Gandhi extended his wishes to countrymen on the occasion of the 77th Independence Day.

French President Emmanuel Macron reshared a month-old post on X (formerly Twitter) when PM Modi visited Paris and congratulated India on its 77th Independence Day.

China congratulated India as it marked its 77th Independence Day. "China and India helped each other in the struggle for national liberation and independence. May the two largest developing countries join hands to promote common development and prosperity in the days ahead," the Chinese embassy tweeted.
In his Independence Day video message, Sadhguru said India was taking its place among the comity of nations and becoming a source of guidance for the world in economics, development and environment. "At a time like this, it is very important that we the citizens of Bharat also equip ourselves as individuals, to become a source of clarity and inspiration for every human being on the planet," Sadhguru said. On the occassion of Independence Day, Russian President Vladimir Putin said India enjoys "well-earned respect on the world arena". In his message to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Putin said "Your country has achieved universally acknowledged success in economic, scientific and technical, social and other fields. India enjoys well-earned respect on the world arena and plays important constructive role in the international affairs."
BSF IG Ravi Gandhi, speaking on Independence Day, told PTI, "I appeal to the people to participate in the work of development under the leadership by PM Modi. We BSF personnel are ready to make all possible efforts to safeguard the country's borders."
CJI DY Chandrachud, speaking at Independence Day celebrations held at the Supreme Court, said the Indian flag "beckons us to allow the constitutional ideas and values in our lives to flourish". "It serves as a symbol of our collective heritage and guides us towards our future aspirations," PTI quoted the CJI as saying.
Antony Blinken, US Secretary of State, extended wishes to India as it marked 77th Independence Day. "On this momentous day, we reflect on the depth and breadth of our strategic partnership, and we celebrate the proud history of the Indian people, who are the key to the bright future we are building together," Blinken said in a statement.
"This last year has shown that the US-India relationship is deeper and more expansive than ever. As the world’s oldest and largest democracies, we've created a strong bond between our nations, a bond that grows ever closer as we work together for a world that is open, prosperous, secure, stable, and resilient," he further said.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, in a video address, said democracy, Constitution and autonomous institutions were in "great danger" today. "Democracy is being torn to shreds by distorting the old constitutional systems that have been running for decades, giving new dimensions to dictatorship. And now, they are trying to create history by renaming old laws, which provided stability and peace to the country," he said.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, in a tweet on 77th Independence Day, called for rising above divisions and casting aside differences. "The chapters of our history are written in courage and resilience. As we hoist the tricolour, let's remember the sacrifices of our freedom fighters and pledge to uphold the values they fought for," the TMC supremo said. "Let their sacrifices inspire us to forge ahead with purpose and dedication. Let us rise beyond divisions, casting aside our differences, and stand united in our journey towards a brighter, better INDIA," Mamata said. The Bengal CM also quoted two lines from Rabindranath Tagore's poem "Where the mind is without fear".
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan extended Independence Day wishes to everyone. "Our freedom movement wasn't just about breaking chains; it was about forging a diverse and inclusive India," Vijayan tweeted. "On this IndependenceDay, let's uphold our nation's secular and democratic ideals, and ensure these values remain at the core of our nationhood. Happy Independence Day!" Vijayan said.
On the occassion of 77th Independence Day, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh paid tributes to freedom fighters and all the soldiers who keep the country's borders safe. "Today, on this auspicious occasion, I bow down to all the freedom fighters and all the soldiers who keep the country's borders safe. Along with keeping India's unity and integrity intact, we have to further strengthen the resolve for a strong and developed India," Singh said.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi extended Independence Day greetings by citing experiences from his 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' foot march. "Bharat Mata is the voice of every Indian," Congress leader Rahul Gandhi wrote.
On the occassion of 77th Independence Day, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said India has always been a peace-loving nation but would not spare those with "ill intention or hostility". In a message to soldiers aired on All India Radio, Singh said, "On this occasion of 77th Independence Day, whether you are standing on the snowy peaks of Kargil where there is lack of oxygen..., whether you are in a submarine in the deep sea, whether you are standing in the hot desert of Thar, or whether you are standing in the middle of evergreen forests in the north-east of India, wherever you are, I want to say that you all reside in the hearts of 140 crore Indians."
Meanwhile, PM Modi has reached the Red Fort where he will soon hoist the tricolour. PM Modi was received by Defence minister Rajnath Singh, Defence MoS Ajay Bhatt and Defence secretary Giridhar Aramane. Thereafter, the Prime Minister inspected the Guard of Honour.

As citizens of the country gear up to celebrate and commemorate India's 77th Independence Day, meticulous planning and heightened security measures have been put in place across the nation to ensure peaceful celebrations. On the morning on August 15, Prime Minister Modi extended greetings to the nation and paid homage to the great freedom fighters.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will deliver his 10th consecutive Independence Day address. Since his inaugural speech in 2014, during which he introduced transformative programs like Swachh Bharat and Jan Dhan accounts, PM Modi has consistently unveiled significant initiatives and engage with citizens on pressing matters from the platform.
Security Arrangements
A multi-layer security arrangement is in place across Delhi with more than 10,000 personnel manning the area in and around the historic Red Fort from where PM Modi will address the nation. Around 1,000 cameras with facial recognition and video analytic systems have been installed to ensure security and monitor VVIP movements.
Traffic movement around the Red Fort has also been restricted till the end of the celebrations.Elaborate security arrangements have been made, the exercise for which started around three-four months ago. Anti-terror activities have also been done to check the areas in the districts near the venue, Delhi Police spokesperson Suman Nalwa told news agency PTI.
This year’s Independence Day will culminate the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ celebrations, which were launched by the Prime Minister from Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, Gujarat on March 12, 2021. A number of new initiatives have been taken to celebrate the 77th Independence Day.
According to an official release from the Ministry of Defence, around 1,800 people from different vocations have been invited from across the country to be a part of the celebrations at the Red Fort as Special Guests in line with the Government’s vision of ‘Jan Bhagidari’.
The special guests include Sarpanches, teachers, nurses, fishermen, Khadi workers, and construction workers of Central Vista among others.
