In the third such incident in the last two days, a police constable died on Wednesday after being run over by a truck in Gujarat's Anand district. Constable Karansinh Raj, 40, of Borsad town police station was carrying out inspection of vehicles at the time of the incident, PTI reported. When he tried to wave down the container truck, it did not stop and mowed him down.

The truck hit Raj around 1 am on a highway near Borsad town in Gujarat. "The constable was grievously injured. He was taken to a hospital where he died around 11.30 am," PTI quoted deputy Superintendent of Police DH Desai as saying.

Following the incident, the driver left the truck at the spot and fled. The truck driver has been identified and efforts are on to nab him.

However, the truck was not found to be carrying any suspicious cargo, police said.

"The constable and a Gram Rakshak Dal jawan accompanying him chased the truck for a few kilometres in a private vehicle and overtook it," Desai said.

"Raj got down and signalled the truck driver to stop. Instead of stopping, the truck ran over him," Desai further said.

The incident comes a day after a deputy superintendent of police investigating illegal stone mining in Haryana's Nuh district was crushed to death by the mining mafia. Tauru DSP Surendra Singh had signalled a dumper-truck to halt to check documents. However, the driver ran over him.

On Wednesday, a woman police official, Sandhya Topno, engaged in vehicle-checking drive near Jharkhand capital Ranchi was mowed down by a pickup van allegedly involved in cattle smuggling, PTI reported. The driver of the van has been arrested, but the cattle smugglers in the vehicle managed to escape.
